The latest Android smartphones from Sony and Samsung are jam-packed with features and performance. But which one is right for you?
Samsung and Sony are two of the most well-known brands in the Android smartphone industry. At CES, both companies showcased uncompromising monsters with about every feature you can think of in their flagship devices.
But there are some substantial distinctions between the two, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. In the wake of our assessment of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the Sony Xperia 1 IV’s specs, this article examines the strengths and weaknesses of each area.

Design
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is a hefty device. Due to its size and weight, it’s tough to utilize it with only one hand since it’s so cumbersome.
When compared to its predecessors, the smooth back is more resistant to fingerprints, and the S-Pen pen is now onboard, yet it still has a boxy feel about it. With IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, Armor Aluminum on the sides, and Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the front and back, it’s not just massive, but it’s durable, too.
There is nothing new or groundbreaking about the design of the Sony Xperia 1 IV; it’s almost similar to the previous model, Sony Xperia 1 III.
To be fair, it isn’t always a terrible thing. However, although the 21:9 aspect ratio screen may be ideal for watching movies, it might feel a bit tight in other circumstances, which is why we appreciate Sony’s decision to maintain the headphone port and expandable MicroSD storage. The Xperia 1 IV is water and dust-resistant, with a grade of IP 65/68.
Performance
As for their hardware, both of these phones include some of the most powerful Android components available. Both the Exynos 2200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 versions of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra are available (which are sold in many other countries).
Even while running demanding games like Geshin Impact, the Exynos 2200 version of the S22 Ultra felt lightning-fast and hardly grew hot to the touch. But there were several annoying software glitches that we encountered when using the phone, which we hope have been resolved since the original launch period but which were nevertheless alarming.
As of yet, we haven’t put the Sony Xperia 1 IV through its paces, but we anticipate it to provide comparable levels of performance. However, we won’t know its actual capabilities until we put it through its paces and run a range of everyday applications on the device.
Camera
The camera setup on the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a seriously impressive megapixel count, including a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera, and a 10-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom, a 10-megapixel telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. In addition, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
The images captured by each of the lenses seem to be exceptionally crisp and full of information, elevating this device to the level of one of the most capable camera phones now available. There is a specific emphasis placed on zoom, which is one of the areas in which the S22 Ultra truly shines in comparison to its competitors.
It would seem that the cameras on Sony’s newest smartphone have been given the most attention throughout the development of the device. Even though there are still three 12-megapixel sensors on the back, a lot else has changed; the zoom lens now has an 85mm-125mm optical zoom, and all three sensors now have Sony’s excellent eye auto-focus and object-tracking, in addition to the capability to shoot 4K HDR video at 120 frames per second. The first results seem promising, but we will need to put it through its paces before concluding.
Battery Capacity
Although the batteries in both handsets have a capacity of 5000 milliampere hours (mAh), this does not necessarily mean that they will have the same degree of durability.
We discovered that the S22 Ultra had “excellent, but not exactly remarkable” battery life when we used it as our primary smartphone. However, it did not have a removable battery. We discovered that by keeping it on its maximum settings and utilizing it consistently, we were able to get through the day, but with very little time left over. Even though it does not come with a charger, it is capable of rapid charging at 45W, which may bring the battery up to its full capacity in about an hour.
Because the battery within the Xperia IV is 5000 milliampere-hours (mAh) more powerful than the one inside its predecessor, we anticipate some moderate gains in performance. Having said that, we were already very satisfied with the battery of the Xperia 1 III, which we discovered would often carry us through the day with 10–15 percent of battery life leftover at the end of the day. This phone does not come with a charging brick or even a cable in the box, but it is capable of a maximum of 30W of rapid charging. Although it does not come with a charging brick or cable, it is capable of rapid charging.
A Preliminary Opinion
Because we haven’t completed our in-depth examination of the Sony Xperia 1 IV, we are unable to provide a definitive judgment. However, based on everything we’ve learned so far and our hands-on time with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it’s evident that making this decision will be difficult.
There may not be a huge difference in performance, screen, or battery between the two, but the design and the camera may be the two most important factors.
Both of these are personal preferences, and although the Xperia 1 IV’s practical features may entice some buyers, its odd appearance may deter others. However, if it wants to be considered a better option than the S22 Ultra, it will need to drastically improve its camera compared to the latter.
