To enhance the typing experience on foldable smartphones, Google updates its Gboard software keyboard for Android and iOS. This means that the Google Pixel Fold is nearing release.
Using a new interface mode, half of the keys are moved to the left and the other half to the right, as explained on Reddit(opens in new tab) (via Android Central(opens in new tab)). When you hold a big, foldable gadget in two hands, the keys are in a more natural position concerning your thumbs.
However, to use the function, you must be using Gboard for Android’s beta version(opens in a new tab), and you may have to wait until Google turns on your device’s split keyboard feature.
Split into two
You’ve got the new functionality if you notice a split keyboard symbol immediately to the right of the settings cog on the Gboard interface. Just tap this button to alternate between the standard and the split layout.
Consider the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3’s built-in keyboard, which has this layout choice by default. Google’s own Gboard is preferred by some Android users, though.
In terms of when the functionality will be sent out to Gboard’s regular app, it’s still unclear. Due to the lack of a foldable iPhone is not featured in the iOS version.
In-depth examination of software and hardware
We don’t know whether Google is working on a foldable phone, but this Gboard update is the latest evidence. As a result, when the folding smartphone is ultimately introduced, Google’s Android keyboard will be ready.
Various enhancements for more extensive displays, including foldable, have been made in Android 12L and Android 13. The software interface is a big part of the new features: how programs appear and work on a split-screen and how components like the status bar adapt.
Before launching its foldable hardware, Google is putting the software underpinnings in place, which is the ideal way to go about it. It’s unlikely that a folding Pixel phone would be as appealing if the software is unreliable and not well-tailored to accommodate the device’s new form factor.
Google has been working on the software for the Pixel Fold, which is expected to be released later this year, maybe in October. However, it may be postponed until 2023.
